Laundromat X Colab
PROJECT SCOPE

Laundromat X Colab is a commercial laundromat located within a newly developed bayside precinct in Brisbane. Delivered in collaboration with Marilena Baynes Interiors, the project began as a raw concrete shell, an open canvas that offered both constraint and opportunity.

Rather than defaulting to the bright, purely functional language of a typical laundromat, the design takes a more deliberate and atmospheric approach. A darkened ceiling anchors the space, allowing exposed services, highlighted in a bold accent red, to become part of the visual identity. This is paired with a palette of deep, moody finishes, contrasted by polished concrete floors that reflect and soften the environment.

A continuous run of diffused LED lighting introduces rhythm and clarity, guiding users through the space while elevating the overall experience. Simple, direct wayfinding and graphic decals reinforce usability, ensuring the space remains intuitive despite its departure from convention.

Beyond aesthetics, the project considers the everyday needs of its users. Accessible work surfaces, clearly defined zones for washing and drying, and dedicated facilities for pet bedding all contribute to a more inclusive and thoughtful environment.

The result is a laundromat that reframes expectation, transforming a routine task into an experience that feels intentional, refined, and connected to its surrounding community.

Collaboration

This project was delivered in collaboration with Marilena Baynes Interior Design Studio, with Disko Designs providing technical material specification, lighting design, graphics, and 3D visualisation.

Design Approach

This project challenges the expectation that utility-driven spaces must feel purely functional. By embracing contrast, lighting, and material restraint, the design introduces atmosphere without compromising clarity or usability.

Material & Lighting Strategy

A restrained palette of black finishes and polished concrete is paired with diffused linear lighting, creating a balance between industrial rawness and refined ambience. Highlighted services introduce a subtle layer of visual interest overhead.

User Experience & Wayfinding

Clear zoning, intuitive circulation, and direct graphic communication ensure ease of use. The layout prioritises legibility, allowing users to navigate the space effortlessly.
